I have always been fascinated by the intersection between Cabernet Franc and the two dominant Bordeaux varieties Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.
Cabernet Franc is “Time”: the father of both Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It is believed to have originated in Basque country, and followed the pilgrims on their way back and forth on the Camino de Santiago de Campostela. Cabernet Franc has been a reoccurring theme in my life from early days at Newton Vineyard to working with 70 year old vines on the famous gravel plain of St. Émilion. Franc occupies the rockiest site on our property on a high perch that we call Ozone.
Merlot is “Space”: vast quantities of velvet, black, rich space and an endless universe of red fruits, violets and iris. Our Merlot clone is a selection from the famous Three Palms Vineyard. It is planted on a steep east facing slope with high levels of surface clay that gives the Merlot weight and power to balance its velvety plush tannin.
Cabernet Sauvignon in minute quantities is the “dark matter” that holds our Space and Time together pushing both Cabernet Franc and Merlot up on its mighty, youthful shoulders.
Blackberry, cherry, plum, blueberry, forest floor, porcini, cedar, grilled steak, violet, leather, tobacco, pomegranate, fennel rich attack with plum and cherry, blackberry, milk chocolate and espresso. Broad mid palate where blackberry pie and blue fruits dance with toffee and tobacco before finishing with blueberry, plum and cocoa. The tannins are lovely and soft now without a touch of rusticity but there are plenty of the them and the balance is impeccable to ensure a long life.

80% Cabernet Franc, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernet Franc has been the most important varietal to Aaron's career, from the very beginning, and is the sexiest wine in our stable. Blueberry, blackberry, cedar, cigar, plum, violets, leather, porcini, iris and red currant on the nose. Huge attack of wild cherry, blueberry, plum, violets, cedar, cinnamon, tannins are fine grained and abundant. Beautiful richness and structure throughout the mid palate. A wine of wonderful depth and elegance that fills the palate with flavor and the soul with joy. 98 cases.

65% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and a 5% Merlot. Cabernet Franc has been the most important varietal to Aaron's career, from the very beginning, and is the sexiest wine in our stable. Cocoa and cherry on the immense attack , plum, toffee, the tannins here are fine grained giving nice richness to the mid palate, lovely weight, texture and density with vanilla, cherry, plum and chocolate in never ending finish. A wine of wonderful depth and elegance that fills the palate with flavor and the soul with joy. 51 cases.
